A Tale of Two Minnesota Cities AKA Life and Death Outcomes?

An online article (https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/minnesota-cops-trained-israeli-forces-restraint-techniques; obtained on 6-3-2020) titled “Minnesota cops ‘trained by Israeli forces in restraint techniques’ ” began the following way:

“OFFICERS from the US police force responsible for the killing of George Floyd received training in restraint techniques and anti-terror tactics from Israeli law-enforcement officers.

Mr Floyd’s death in custody last Monday, the latest in a succession of police killings of African Americans, has sparked continuing protests and rioting in US cities.

At least 100 Minnesota police officers attended a 2012 conference hosted by the Israeli consulate in Chicago, the second time such an event had been held.

There they learned the violent techniques used by Israeli forces as they terrorise the occupied Palestinian territories under the guise of security operations.

The so-called counterterrorism training conference in Minneapolis was jointly hosted by the FBI.”

At The Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota the following pamphlet excerpt is highlighting a Treatment by the Company Geron (https://mcforms.mayo.edu/mc7300-mc7399/mc7323.pdf; obtained on 6-3-2020) :

“STOPPING HEMATOLOGICAL CANCER: New Drug Induces Remissions in Myelofibrosis

The results of a Mayo Clinic study demonstrate that a drug named imetelstat induces remissions in some patients with myelofibrosis. This is a form of chronic leukemia that affects the patient’s bone marrow that is replaced by fibrosis (scar tissue) instead of blood-producing cells. Scientists do not yet know the exact mechanism of action for imetelstat, but believe it interferes with the survival and proliferation of cancer cells by inhibiting a critical enzyme called telomerase. One of the functions of telomerase is to repair the ends of chromosomes called telomeres, and because cancer cells have shorter than normal telomere size, they are particularly susceptible to the drug. The study results are promising. Some patients participating in the clinical trial taking imetelstat obtained dramatic responses, and we have seen some complete responses (tantamount to a cure), which is almost unheard of in this disease.

Although patients may experience relief in response to other treatments, their bone marrow does not usually return to normal. But in the case of this new therapy, some of the patients participating in the trial
developed normal bone marrow. Researchers studied imetelstat in 33 patients at Mayo Clinic and have now followed the first 22 patients
for more than six months. Among these 22 patients, two achieved complete remissions and three partial remission, including reversal of bone marrow fibrosis in four of the five patients.”

The above excerpt is from 2014. Geron’s imetelestat has continued to help patients in clinical trials and in a recent Geron conference call imetelstat was called a “paradigm shift” in the treatment of Myelofibrosis. The Mineapolis Police Force had four of its officers charged either with second-degree murder (the former Minneapolis Police officer who pressed his knee into George Floyd’s neck) or aiding and abetting second-degree murder (the other three officers on the scene) yesterday.

Two different tales across two cities in Minnesota. Geron’s treatment is being tested in hospitals and laboratories in numerous countries by physicians and scientists at the helm. Police tactics may be changed by people of all walks of life in the earthy deadly streets of the towns, cities, states, and countries across the world. All represent a dialectical exchange of ideas. All are consistent with “Holland’s Theory: Strengthening It” written in 1985 AKA “A Theory of Social Change”.

Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders identified an eight point plan in a letter to Minority Leader Charles Schumer and tweeted: “We have got to act boldly to eradicate systemic racism and police violence. I am calling for sweeping policy reforms to protect people—particularly communities of color—who have suffered violence for far too long.” The plan to Charles Schumer in a letter on 6-2-2020 included:

• Amend federal civil rights laws to allow more effective prosecution of police misconduct by changing the standard from willfulness to recklessness;
• Abolish “qualified immunity,” so police officers can be held civilly liable for abuses;
• Prohibit the transfer of offensive military equipment to police departments;
• Strip federal funds from departments that violate civil rights;
• Create a federal model policing program that emphasizes de-escalation, non-lethal force and culturally competent policing in which access to federal funds depends upon the level of reform adopted. As part of this effort to modernize and humanize police departments we need to enhance the recruitment pool by ensuring that the resources are available to pay wages that will attract the top-tier officers we need to do the difficult work of policing;
• Provide funding to states and municipalities to create civilian corps of unarmed first responders to supplement law enforcement, such as social workers, EMTs, and trained mental health professionals, who can handle order maintenance violations, mental health emergencies, and low-level conflicts to aid police officers;
• Require agencies to make records of police misconduct publicly available;
• Require all jurisdictions that receive federal grant funding to establish independent police conduct review boards that are broadly representative of the community and that have the authority to refer deaths that occur at the hands of police or in police custody to federal authorities for investigation. In addition, the boards would be authorized to report to federal authorities other types of abuses by police including patterns of misconduct. This would be supplemental to current federal authority to commence investigations. Clearly we need to enhance federal funding for such investigations.”
